Senate Democrats Take Governor, Legislature to Task over Ethical Failures, Political Fraud Behind Oakland County Redistricting
Hundreds of pages of documents released today confirm claims of political treachery behind Oakland County gerrymandering
Lansing – Senate Democratic leaders Gretchen Whitmer and Tupac A. Hunter issued the following statement today regarding the release of over 200 pages of leaked documentation that reveal significant ethical and political breaches by Governor Snyder and Oakland County elected officials, both local and legislative. The documents substantiate Senate Democrats' claims of political gerrymandering and reveal that Republicans' motivation in passing legislation to redraw Oakland County Commission districts was overtly partisan and intentionally devious. The news calls into question the actions of leadership of both bodies, but also tarnishes the Governor's faƧade of being outside the political establishment.
“It gives me no great joy to be right in this situation, and it's actually downright scary to see so much of the political corruption we suspected proven true,” said Senator Whitmer. “Sadly, this is just the latest and most brazen incident that has become a pattern of conduct in Lansingif you can't win by the rules, change them. From the Governor to L. Brooks Patterson, Republican Legislative leadership and even Mike Bishop, candidate for Oakland County Prosecutor, either they don't know the law or they don't care to enforce or uphold it. Neither is acceptable. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and Republicans in Michigan have proven the adage right yet again. Let's hope that this Republican way of life hasn't corrupted the Supreme Court, too, and that impartial, unbiased justice is served tomorrow.”
“This is conduct unbecoming not just of our government, but of our society. I am extremely embarrassed and outraged that the Governor and my legislative colleagues would resort to base and flagrant partisan tricks like this. Unfortunately, given the track record of the Republican leadership in Lansing, I'm not surprised that they would so blatantly waste taxpayer dollars to circumvent the democratic process and betray the public's trust to further their own political agenda,” said Senator Hunter. “Governor Snyder's direct involvement, indifference or outright ignorance about the partisan motives behind this legislation is the most frustrating of all, as none of which speak very highly of his ability to lead. He has either lost his influence over Republican leadership in the Legislature, or given up entirely on transcending the political fray. Looking at this issue, it appears that Governor Snyder was either complicit, compliant or complacent, and he did a disservice to the people of Michigan in signing this bill.”
Senate Democrats warned of the overt political maneuvering behind House Bill 5187 when it was voted on in the Senate in December, and again after every legal ruling corroborating those claims. The pages of e-mail documents released today reveal intentional and pervasive political corruption in taking up legislation solely to tamper with the election process and further political gains in Oakland County. The proof of such activities calls into question countless other legislative efforts by Governor Snyder and the Republican-led Legislature to further a partisan and petty agenda.
