Senate Dems Blast Republicans for Walking Away From K-12 Crisis of Their Own Creation

LANSING – Senate Democrats sharply criticized Republicans today for turning their backs on students as they passed legislation designed only to brush the statewide school funding crisis under the rug rather than actually work to solve the problem. The Republican-passed legislation, HB 4813 and 4815, allows the state to selectively dissolve the Buena Vista and Inkster school districts without any consideration for the severe funding crises that will remain in those areas and others throughout Michigan.

Senator Tupac A. Hunter (D-Detroit) introduced legislation today that would give local governments the power to regulate the use of fireworks any time every day of the year. While Michigan law was amended to expand the sale and use of once-illegal fireworks in the state, there are currently no state laws that regulate their use the day before, the day of, and the day after federal holidays.
